Centre-based Respite Program

The Centre-based Respite Program gives carers a break to take care of their own health and wellbeing, with the comfort of knowing AMCS is supporting their dependants.

We have many initiatives specifically for people from different backgrounds to keep them connected to their language and culture. Funded by the Australian Government, the Respite Program is tailored towards participants from an Eastern European, South Indian and Sri Lankan background.

The Eastern European Groups in Melbourne’s Northern and Eastern Region are provided in partnership with Uniting AgeWell.

Services

We organise transport, food and activities for our program participants while their carers recharge or take a break. The nature and type of activities depends on their interest, cultural background and capability. For example: gentle exercise, breathing techniques, singing, playing small percussion instruments, dancing, craft, cooking, outings, guest speakers, trivia, games and technology training.

Participants can access this service if:

  • aged over 65 years
  • have a carer
  • based in Northern, Eastern or Southern Metro Region.

Thanks to the Australian Government subsidy, only a small weekly fee applies.

Please call (03) 9689 9170 and request the Respite Coordinator for the relevant region — Eastern, Northern or Southern Metro. Or complete our contact form, select Social/Respite Services and include Centre-based Respite in the message.

Zygmunt Świstak’s art exhibition at Respite Wantirna

Zygmunt Swistak, a veteran of World War II, survived COVID-19 isolation through painting.
When restrictions eased, Mr Swistak shared his artworks with the Centre-based Respite Program in Wantirna through a modest gallery.

Mr Swistak loves painting horses.

“Painting them is demanding and risky for the artist. You can easily spoil everything,” Mr Swistak explained. “But wild Australian horses express great freedom.”

Mr Swistak painted his two-year-old granddaughter for many years.

The Centre-based Respite Program gives seniors the opportunity to share their talents, skills and abilities.
