Ursula is a 78-year-old active senior who is the primary carer for her husband, Piya. They live independently in their own home. Ursula loves to stay connected with the community and she is actively involved in community groups. With the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, she had limited access to connect with family and community events.
She saw a flyer for AMCS Be Connected and contacted our Project Coordinator, Nalika, around the time of Piya’s 84th birthday. Nalika suggested a Zoom birthday party to celebrate with loved ones. Ursula was excited and asked AMCS to help. Their sons, grandchildren and family friends joined the online birthday event.
Ursula was a quick learner with technology and keen to know more. Initially, AMCS provided instructions over the phone. Thankfully, she was patient, a good listener and AMCS guided her easily. As she started to use Zoom, she participated in other AMCS community engagement programs. Now a regular member of our knitting and friendship cafés, Ursula made many friends and has shared her knitting knowledge. Connecting online has given her the opportunity to enjoy her hobbies while caring for Piya.
I’m knowledgeable, but not an expert in digital skills. I saw the flyer for Be Connected on Facebook and contacted AMCS. AMCS’ lead mentor was friendly and helped me learn how to use the My Aged Care app, which was very useful. In addition, I now know how to online bank and order local food with confidence.
AMCS invited me to become a Digital Mentor to help other seniors use the internet to make life easier. I initially refused and was afraid to become a mentor. After participating in one of the online events, I became confident I could help others. I will receive my mentor training soon. I feel strong now. I know where to go if I have a problem going online.
